You should care because the stories make you care. But this is fiction, not history, and all of it is mutable. That means that Elektra can live again, that Cyclops can cheat on his wife with his old enemy the White Queen, and that Iron Man can reveal his identity to the world, erase that knowledge, then reveal it again. But as long as the stories are compelling an affecting, then the experience is worthwhile. The universe is there to serve the stories, the stories aren’t there to serve the universe.
