Paul Pope: He has a kind of bad rep for being gruff and rough but he’s very kind and big-hearted to his friends, very magnanimous without being showy. He is very wary. He can be really competitive. One cool thing about him… he has an “ear” for dialogue. You’ll go out with the guy and he will be totally concentrating on your conversation (he is a great conversationalist too) – but he will also have that “cocktail ear” thing where he will overhear other people talking…once in a while, he’ll pull out a pen and write down something he overhears. That goes into his work. On a wall in his studio is a huge collection of tiny clippings from magazines and newspapers, of faces of different kinds of people– all kinds of people, from beautiful women to slobby-looking hobo-types. He looks at these and gets ideas for characters from these.
