oh i’m sorry sweetheart, i thought you was my other woman

i lived in virginia during the school year when i was younger and spent the summers in georgia. i’m not exactly sure when this story happened, but i know that it was at the first place i lived in VA, so it must’ve been 6th or 7th grade.

i don’t remember all of the details. it was at least 14 years ago, and i can barely remember all of last year. anyway, i’d been out somewhere with my mom and little brother. maybe out to eat, maybe to the mall. out to eat is much more likely, considering that it was raining like a mug. just pouring down in sheets.

so we get back home, mom has to park fairly far from our door. it’s a trek across the parking lot, so i’m like, “i’ll just run to the door and wait for them instead of using an umbrella.” and so, i do it. take off across the parking lot at full speed, eyes focused on getting to the hallway that leads to our place.

and i slip. the rain left the asphalt very slick, and i must’ve hit it just right, because i slip and fall and slide a little bit. i hear my mom screaming my name and i open my eyes and i don’t remember what i said to her. i look to my right, though, and see the treads in the front right tire of a VW Bug. One that came extremely close to hitting me after i slipped.

i can remember the look on the face of the young white chick who was driving it and it was total deer in the headlights. i probably ruined her night out. my mom shuffles me into the crib. i don’t know where the umbrella was, but it was probably forgotten.

i cried like a baby that night, man.
