It’s such a small industry in terms of numbers of people employed, why should we care? Because as Tracey Morgan says, “Black is the new President, bitch.” Meaning, don’t underestimate the soft power of image-making combined with the hard power of being the one making the calls. For product advertising in any form to move beyond easy box checking (“Hey, there’s a Black dude at the second table in that ad.”) you need more actual Black people inside the sausage-making factory.
