“The staunchest opponents of Lucasfilm’s expansion are now being accused of driving away the filmmaker and opening the door to a low-income housing development. That has created an atmosphere that one opponent, who asked not to be identified, saying she feared for her safety, described as “sheer terror” and likened to “Syria.” —

“Guys, learn from the Avengers movie. The real villains here are the cynics. They are our Loki. The people looking to pit fandom and an entire industry against itself to make themselves feel powerful. The worms who never had the courage to create anything themselves looking to forge an identity on the internet by getting in a good dig. By being the guy who got the awesome last word in. These are the real bad guys of our world. Not Marvel executives. Not movie studios. Not the hundreds and thousands of creatives who make movies. Don’t fall for it.” —

the good guys aren’t the people saying “yo, these guys got screwed and were never properly compensated.” no, those people are cretins who just want to be internet famous (?) and take credit away from other people, because credit is a zero-sum game. the good guys, children, are the corporate overlords who do the screwing

“And please, leery tragi-men, don’t dribble on about “Scarlett Johansson’s arse in 3D” being “worth the price of admission”. The film was shot in 2D and converted to 3D using software, which means you’re actually drooling over a 2D image of Scarlett Johansson’s arse wrapped around a wireframe model of an arse that isn’t there. You’re sitting in front of HAL 9000, jerking off like a monkey. Somewhere, the machines are laughing at you.” —

“Aronofsky leads Evans to discuss the anime director Satoshi Kon, whose imagery was borrowed by Aronofsky in Requiem for a Dream (a shot of a character huddled in a bathtub). “Kon was just fantastic, and such a loss. The first film of his I saw was Perfect Blue and that was such a major step up for anime. I’d seen Otomo’s work and Miyazaki’s work, and those were two very different styles… and then all of a sudden Kon was making films that were just like a normal thriller, but with this incredible imagination behind them, without going into cyberpunk, or the gentle eco-friendly stuff that Miyazaki was doing. This was something completely different; it felt very cinematic and terrifying. Perfect Blue was so frightening to watch. And then Kon followed up with Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers… These films are incredible.” — Raiding Anime | Manga UK Blog

Anonymous asked: Since you've stopped reading DC and Marvel comics you aren't talking about them as much on the 4thletter. Has that affected your readership at all? Do you even look at your stats or care about that sort of stuff?

The only stats I really look at are referrals. Hits are kinda pointless, since 4l! isn’t a money-maker, so I don’t stress about those too much. I quit reviewing the Big Two at the end of February, with this post on Spider-Man Reign & Spider-Man being the big farewell on 03/02. I like the symmetry of that, since Spidey was my first comic and is still my favorite hero/character in comics, and Reign really got at what makes him so amazing.

Looking at stats… February was our best month ever in terms of pageviews at that point, but March beat it, and then April beat March. (Something something 7 ate 9.) May probably won’t beat April, but I’m okay with that. I like the fact that jettisoning the Big Two from my regular things I post about hasn’t appreciably affected things at all. That’s definitely a good feeling. Plus, I’ve been writing about other stuff for a long time, and I think people are used to my whims by this point.

And I mean, Gavin still writes about that stuff as much as he ever did, alongside wrestling/comedy things. I made a conscious decision a year or two ago to turn 4l! into a comics+everything site, with comics being more or less the nominal focus, and I think it’s worked out. I spent November last year in a funk and really only wrote about The Roots and Nas and Harlock to cheer myself up and hits went about as high as May currently is at this moment, but it’s not really about the hits for me. They show me what people like, which is nice to know, but it’s really more about having conversations than soaking up hits. Otherwise, I’d be putting every single comic/creator I don’t like on blast, ‘cause people absolutely love when I do that. I like being able to get away with posting stuff I’ve just noodled around on and haven’t crystalized into fully-formed ideas yet, or doing really specific stuff about art that no one cares about but me.

In the books, Osborne’s super-evil plan falls through and almost everybody goes to jail – but Captain America asks Hand to work with him, as a kind of double- or-triple-agent or something? The thing is, a lot of other superheroes don’t get the memo. And so when the New Avengers decide that Victoria Hand might still be evil, they decide to pay her a visit and interrogate her.

Except they don’t just interrogate her. They torture her.

Remember, Victoria Hand has no superpowers. She’s a highly-trained, super-skilled bureaucrat, essentially. But when a handful of the world’s greatest superheroes come to pay her a visit, they decide to beat her, threaten to kill her, and even make her imagine that she’s been tossed out a window to fall to her death.

Is that what heroes do? Is that what anyone does?
